I havent been this happy since I met Darren the second time round (the first was in second class and he was pretty cute). WE'VE FOUND THE PERFECT LAND to build Kesho Leo on. It's only 2 acres but sits next to another 2 (which we've already begun putting feelers out for). It's in Sinon, just 1.6km from the "volunteer/office" land we're buying. It sits high up on a hill, has an unobstructed view of Mt Meru and Mt Kili (neither of whcih we've seen becasue rainy season is in full swing here and it is SOGGY and OVERCAST, so our magnificent mountains are hiding under the cloud. Anyway, we can see their bases, so we know they are there and ready to be appreciated from our wonderful block.IT's soil is good for building (not the black cotton soil that abounds) and also farming. It has a gentle slope. It is near a Lutheran church (singing on sundays!) and is a 20min walk to bustling Njiro village. OUr next-door neighbour there owns and works a sun-baked mudbrick quarry. Too good! THe land is surrounded by a seasonal river (sometimes there, sometimes not) and also has 'inferegi' (a tunnel dug along its outskirts that town water is pumped along). It is lush and sits on a hill so you can watch sunrise and sunset. I can't tell you how happy we are with it - it could not be better if we desgined it ourselves. Well, we did - it's basically our "utopia" block that we mapped out jokingly many, many months ago - except its' better!
Access is gonna be a bit tricky in the rain, but we are figuring that's a small price to pay for such a perfect block, in such a perfect location. The starting price is $20,000USD, which is clearly just to make us laugh... WE're aiming to pay about $8000USD and then try and get the two acres next door (different owner) for the same price. WIsh us luck. We are negotiating using wonderful Nolasco, the sinon village elder, who popped up in our Gimme Shelter newsletter not so long ago. he has offered to buy the land for us so we dont ahve to pay a 'white person' price and then we repay him. Bewdiful.... It's a great day for FWS - this is a major, major breakthru for us, so please wish us luck with the next steps as they unfold!
